Kate Smith

The jewellery that I create is a result of detailed drawings of nature. From interesting grasses to seed heads hanging from winter-bare branches, these notations are abstracted into wearable forms. The Patterned collection is my largest body of work. Featuring thousands of tiny holes in silver and gold, the effect of erosion and decay is suggested. The Etched collection demonstrates the specialist technique of acid etching, where patterns are created on the metal, and then carefully etched away using an acid solution. The weight of silver is contrasted with the delicacy of the carefully drawn line. The lines are highlighted through patination (blackening of the silver) or through the application of 22ct gold plating. Linear drawings are translated into metal in the The Stranded collection. Striking, yet simple, clean lines in gold and silver provide a sophisticated yet very modern feel to this range.

The Precious Collection features 18ct yellow gold with diamond detail. This collection is also available in white gold, as well as silver set with diamonds. Each collection features earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and cufflinks. I also produce a small selection of clip style earrings and brooches. I can also work to client’s specific requirements, and am happy to take on individual commissions.

Kate trained at Stourbridge College of Art and Design before completing a degree in Jewellery Design at Middlesex University.

After working with numerous other contemporary designer/makers whilst living in London, she moved back to the Midlands to take inspiration from her countryside surroundings of Shropshire and to set up her own jewellery business in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.
