REBECCA GEE

I want to make items that have more than just an aesthetic value. I aim to heighten people’s awareness of the world around them. For this collection, I want to highlight the importance of bees and the impact they have on the world around us.

From 1985 there has been a 25% loss of the commercial honeybees in Europe. Since 2006 there has been a loss of 40% of the commercial honeybee in the U.S. From 2010 there has been a loss of 45% of the commercial honey bee in the U.K. The decline of bees is a serious environmental issue, which I don’t think people really comprehend. Without bees to naturally pollinate our planet there will be severe economic repercussions. These tiny creatures have a big impact on our planet, so hopefully I will be able to raise awareness of some sort through my jewellery.

My collection is visually inspired by their wings, with a comparison between their delicacy and the fragility of life. Through use of angles, I have also tried to capture the fact that these insects are supposed to be flightless due to their ergonomic build, but defeating the challenges of nature, they do. I have also drawn on inspiration from their hives and their protective structure. By creating these larger scale and bright pieces I am giving these creatures the attention they deserve
